The Problem
The commission for RSECon23 required a visual identity that could bridge the gap between two distinct entities: the University of Swansea as the host and the Society of Research Software Engineering. The challenge was to create a logo that felt geographically relevant to the local setting while remaining firmly rooted in the professional identity of the RSE community. Furthermore, the design needed to be functional enough to work seamlessly across the event website and translate effectively onto high-visibility merchandise like stickers and t-shirts.
The Solution
I developed a logo that uses a strategic color palette to pay homage to both the University and the Society, creating a unified visual link between the hosts and the organization. To provide a sense of place, I incorporated a wave motif as a nod to Swansea’s coastal geographic position, adding a unique and meaningful element to the conference branding. This resulting identity was optimised for versatility, ensuring a bold and professional appearance across all digital platforms and physical merchandise, celebrating the local character of the 2023 event.
